The going is the depth of each step, measured nosing to nosing. 240mm is the minimum allowed in Australia; 250mm gives a roomier step but a longer staircase.

Your staircase is always made to this width or a touch over, never under, so there's material to trim for a neat fit on site.

More steps makes a gentler, longer staircase; fewer makes it steeper and shorter. Australian rules allow up to 18 risers in a single flight.

The landing counts as a step itself, so don't include it here.

Closed has a solid board behind every step. Open leaves the gap visible for a lighter look, using thicker steps with stub risers (legalizers) fitted.

Paint grade costs less and is supplied ready to paint. Your steps are always made in the timber you chose above.
